Previews began last night for the highly anticipated Springsteen on Broadway, Bruce’s intimate show blending music and storytelling for an audience of under a thousand on the Great White Way, and the lucky attendees of opening night are raving about a “magical, special” performance.
NJ.com gathered several fan reviews of the evening; one described the show as “just Bruce on a very sparse stage with just a black grand piano, and a few acoustic guitars. The “set” was just a grey wall and a few of those metal touring cases that bands use on the road for their gear.” The fan added that: “The best parts of the show were when he sat at the piano and sang and talked. I’d never seen him do that before so it was really special.”
Another fan said: “Tonight was something very special … it was kind of like if Bruce came into your living room and just sat there, played piano, played guitar and told stories, some from the (“Born to Run” autobiography), some not from the book, a lot of special moments.”
The opener of The Boss’ four-month residency was particularly memorable on Tuesday night as it came one day after the news of the passing of fellow American music legend, and friend, Tom Petty. Audience members told NY Daily News that, “Springsteen, dressed in black jeans and tee, dedicated the show to his friend Tom Petty and sent out prayers to the late singer’s family and to the Heartbreakers”.
Springsteen will perform this especially personal show at the Walter Kerr Theatre 4-5 nights per week until February 3. Tickets sold through Verified Fan on Ticketmaster, and were notably difficult to get, but when asked if tickets would continue to be released throughout the Springsteen on Broadway run, a spokesperson for the show did not immediately return comment.
Those willing to pay a steeper price for this once-in-a-lifetime show can count on the secondary market for Springsteen tickets. Those who can’t snag tickets can live vicariously through Instagram:
